As a global, remote-first private company with subscription and usage-based revenue, Customer.io is seeking a leader to oversee its existing accounting team of about seven people, with room for the team to grow, and strengthen its accounting operations and controls. The role reports to the VP of Finance and works with senior partners across functions including Sales, Legal, IT, HR, and Engineering.
The controller will oversee financial close and reporting, revenue and equity accounting, audit readiness, systems and automation, and selected treasury work. The current close takes about 10 business days; the goal is to bring it to 6ā8 days within the first 12 months while reducing post-close adjustments and overdue reconciliations. The role also covers coordination of accounting and compliance needs across international entities and a distributed workforce.
The stated annual starting salary is $250,000ā$280,000 USD, or an equivalent in local currency, with the amount structured by geographic zone and experience. The package includes stock options, full premium coverage for medical, dental, vision, mental health, and supplemental insurance for the employee and family, 16 weeks of paid parental leave, unlimited PTO, remote-work and wellness stipends, and a professional development budget. The interview sequence is a 30-minute recruiter screen, a 45-minute hiring manager screen, two 30-minute cross-functional conversations with Legal and People partners, a 60-minute case review, and a 30-minute CFO bar-raiser call. Final candidates undergo a background check and employment verification.
Role at a glance: Customer.io is seeking a US-remote Global Controller to lead its accounting team, financial close, technical accounting, and controls.
Responsibilities mentioned in the listing
- Lead monthly and quarterly close, the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and reconciliations; deliver timely, accurate US GAAP financials and target a 6ā8-business-day close within 12 months.
- Oversee subscription and usage-based revenue accounting under ASC 606, including explaining how ARR, billings, deferred revenue, contract assets, and usage adjustments reconcile to reported revenue.
- Prepare technical accounting memos on contract changes, standalone selling price allocation, variable consideration, and capitalized contract costs.
- Own equity compensation accounting under ASC 718, including grant accuracy, 409A timing, expense, modifications, and cap-table integrity, working with stock plan administration.
- Lead and develop an accounting team of about seven people, with scope to grow the team and develop its leads.
- Build and maintain controls appropriate for a global, remote-first private company, keeping the books ready for audit.
- Set the accounting systems roadmap and advance automation for close and reporting.
Qualifications stated in the listing
- At least 10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including leadership through managers or team leads.
- Background in Big 4 or equivalent top-tier public accounting.
- Strong US GAAP expertise, especially ASC 606 accounting for subscription and usage-based revenue.
- A personally owned accounting automation or AI implementation with a measurable outcome, such as less manual reconciliation work, a shorter close, or fewer errors; candidates should be able to discuss the work in detail.
- Experience scaling an operating accounting function rather than starting one from scratch.
- Demonstrated success with external audits and maintaining audit-ready books.
- Leadership and communication skills, including the ability to work credibly with senior cross-functional stakeholders.
- Preferred: internal controls or SOX-readiness experience; experience in a remote-first, globally distributed company; M&A or deal accounting exposure; or an active or inactive CPA license.

About the role
Hi, my name is Diep N, VP, Finance at Customer.io, and I'm looking for a Global Controller to take the close, the books, and our control environment and make them theirs.
We're a global, remote-first, private company built on subscription and usage-based revenue, and as we grow we need a controller who can lead the team already in place and sharpen the fundamentals. You'll lead a team of ~7, growing, across revenue accounting, close, AP/AR, payroll, and treasury, and partner closely with me and, given our CFO's broad remit, with stakeholders across Sales, Legal, IT, HR, and Engineering.
What you'll do
- Lead monthly and quarterly close, GL, AP/AR, payroll, and account reconciliations, delivering accurate, timely US GAAP financials. Close currently runs ~10 business days; get us to 6-8 days within your first 12 months, with fewer post-close adjustments and aged reconciliations.
- Own revenue accounting and serve as our technical accounting authority on subscription and usage-based revenue recognition (ASC 606), including the ARR-to-GAAP bridge: reconciling ARR, billings, deferred revenue, contract assets, and usage true-ups to reported revenue, and explaining the delta to leadership and the board in plain terms.
- Author technical accounting position memos on contract modifications, SSP allocation, variable consideration, and capitalized contract costs, the work that makes "technical accounting authority" real.
- Own equity compensation accounting (ASC 718): grant accuracy, 409A timing, expense, modifications, and cap-table integrity, in partnership with stock plan administration.
- Manage and grow a team of ~7, with room to scale, building trust quickly and developing the leads beneath you.
- Build a control framework suited to a global, remote-first, private company with subscription and usage-based revenue, keeping the books audit-ready.
- Own our accounting systems roadmap and drive automation across close and reporting.
- Own select treasury operations, including cash management and banking relationships, and partner on FX exposure monitoring given our multi-currency footprint.
- Run our external audit relationship and coordinate with external tax partners on compliance, provisions, and filings.
- Manage the realities of a distributed, remote-first global team: statutory accounting coordination, payroll and contractor controls, entity reporting, and working with Legal, HR, and Tax on international compliance.
What we're looking for
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leading a team through managers or leads.
- A Big 4 (or equivalent top-tier public accounting) foundation.
- Deep US GAAP mastery, particular strength in subscription and usage-based revenue recognition (ASC 606).
- A concrete, personally-owned automation or AI deployment in accounting with a measurable result, eliminating a manual reconciliation, reducing close time, or lowering error rate, that you can speak to in detail.
- Experience scaling an accounting function that was already running, not building one from zero.
- A proven track record with external audits and keeping books audit-ready.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with credibility partnering with senior, cross-functional stakeholders.
- Nice to have: internal controls or SOX-readiness experience; remote-first/globally distributed company experience; M&A or deal accounting exposure; CPA license, active or inactive.
