Role overview

This job description has been rewritten in fresh language using the facts in the listing. Source credit and original listing details are available below.

Kong Inc. is hiring a full-time Product Manager, Billing (Senior Staff) for a remote role in the United States, with compensation of $160,000–$230,000 per year. Reporting to the Sr Director, Product (Platform), this role owns the commercial systems behind Konnect, connecting what customers buy and use to access, provisioning, and invoicing.

The scope spans plans and entitlements, usage metering, self-service checkout and subscriptions, billing administration, enterprise billing workflows, and cloud marketplace billing. You’ll work with Product Growth, Pricing & Packaging, Finance, GTM, Sales, and Engineering to turn historically manual billing and fulfillment operations into productized, automated capabilities. This work supports Kong’s expansion from a single-product API gateway company into a multi-product enterprise and its company-wide pricing and packaging overhaul.

Role at a glance: Kong is hiring a remote U.S. Product Manager, Billing (Senior Staff) to lead Konnect’s billing, monetization, provisioning, and fulfillment systems.

Responsibilities mentioned in the listing

  • Set a multi-year direction for Konnect pricing, metering, entitlements, and invoicing; distinguish shared platform capabilities from feature-specific needs and sequence delivery.
  • Create a consistent entitlements model across contracts, product access, provisioning, and billing.
  • Turn pricing and packaging decisions into implemented plans, metering changes, contract updates, customer migrations, and revenue-safe rollouts.
  • Own usage event processing, aggregation, and customer reporting, maintaining financial-grade accuracy, auditability, and reconciliation.
  • Lead self-service plan discovery, checkout, payment integration, subscription changes and renewals, lapse recovery, retries, dunning, and customer billing administration.
  • Connect enterprise and channel sales to billing through CPQ-to-entitlement synchronization, custom contracts, invoice billing, and AWS, GCP, and Azure marketplace billing.
  • Automate provisioning and fulfillment workflows and migrate from the current metering and billing system to a stack suited to the new pricing and packaging framework.

Qualifications stated in the listing

  • At least 6 years of SaaS product management experience, including 2 or more years in billing, monetization, or pricing.
  • Able to understand billing-stack components and co-design architecture with an engineering partner.
  • Experience taking a pricing or packaging change from proposal to production, including financial modeling, plan setup, grandfathering, migrations, sales enablement, and customer communications.
  • Experience building or scaling consumption-based monetization, with an understanding of the tradeoffs among simplicity, accuracy, and customer trust in usage-based billing.
  • Able to query data independently using SQL, Snowflake, Hex, or an equivalent tool, and use findings to guide priorities.
  • Direct experience working with Stripe or a metered billing platform such as Metronome, Orb, or OpenMeter.
  • Commitment to high-quality billing experiences across plan pages, checkout, invoices, and usage dashboards.
  • Experience in or near API, infrastructure, or developer-platform products, with comfort in their technical context.

Are you ready to unlock intelligence?

If you don’t think you meet all of the criteria below but are still interested in the job, please apply. Nobody checks every box - we’re looking for candidates that are particularly strong in a few areas, and have some interest and capabilities in others.

The Mission:

Kong is building the future of AI connectivity, empowering developers to connect, secure, and scale their applications with speed and intelligence. We are hiring a Product Manager, Billing to lead the product and systems work behind how Konnect makes money: entitlements, metering, checkout, invoicing, provisioning, and the enterprise and marketplace motions that surround them.

In this role you are the product owner of Konnect's commercial operating layer: the systems that translate what Sales sells and what customers use into what ends up on an invoice. That means plan and entitlement design, the usage metering pipeline, self-serve checkout and subscription lifecycle, customer organization and billing admin experiences, enterprise billing workflows (CPQ sync, custom contracts), and cloud marketplace billing. You will work hand-in-hand with Product Growth, Pricing & Packaging, Finance, GTM, Sales, and Engineering.

This role reports to the Sr Director, Product (Platform) and sits at the intersection of two multi-year transformations: Kong's move from a single-product API gateway company into a multi-product enterprise, and Monetization's company-wide overhaul of pricing and packaging. The Billing, Provisioning, and Fulfillment program has historically been manual and relationship-driven. Your job is to turn it into a product, so Sales can sell more, Finance can bill more accurately, and customers get an experience that matches the quality of what they are paying for.

What You’ll Do:

  • Platform Vision: Set a multi-year direction for how Konnect prices, meters, entitles, and invoices. Decide what becomes shared platform capability versus what stays feature-specific, and sequence delivery so near-term work lands without creating long-term drag.

  • Unified Entitlements: Build the entitlements model that determines what every customer can access within Konnect. Make entitlements a first-class concept that is consistently defined in contracts, enforced in-product, honored by provisioning, and reflected in billing.

  • Pricing & Packaging Delivery: Act as the product and systems counterpart to Monetization. Translate pricing and packaging decisions into production reality: configuring plans, reshaping metering, updating contracts, coordinating customer migrations, and making sure a rollout doesn't disrupt existing revenue.

  • Metering & Usage Visibility: Run the event pipeline, aggregation layer, and reporting experiences that show customers what they consumed and what they are being charged. Hold a financial-grade bar on accuracy, auditability, and reconcilability.

  • Checkout & Subscription Lifecycle: Own how customers self-serve onto a plan, change plans, renew, lapse, and recover. That covers plan discovery, checkout, the underlying payments integration, subscription state, retries and dunning, and the admin surfaces where customers manage their own billing.

  • Enterprise & Marketplace Motions: Connect Kong's enterprise sales and channel motions to the billing stack: CPQ-to-entitlement sync, bespoke contract handling, invoice-based billing, and marketplace billing across AWS, GCP, and Azure as we expand our presence there.

  • Fulfillment Automation: Replace today's manual, high-touch provisioning and fulfillment processes with productized, automated workflows. This includes migrating off our current metering and billing system onto a target stack that supports the new pricing and packaging framework.

  • Outcomes & Measurement: Define the health metrics for the domain, including net revenue retention, billing-driven churn, invoice dispute rate, collections aging, and billing support ticket load. Use them to set priorities and hold the team accountable for results.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Have at least 6 years of product management experience in SaaS, with 2 or more spent directly in a billing, monetization, or pricing domain.

  • Can reason about the moving parts of a billing stack well enough to co-design the architecture with your engineering partner.

  • Have carried a pricing or packaging change from proposal through to production, including financial modeling, plan configuration, grandfathering logic, migrations, sales enablement, and customer communication.

  • Have built or scaled consumption-based monetization and understand the tradeoffs between simplicity, accuracy, and customer trust when metering drives the invoice.

  • Pull your own numbers when you need them (SQL, Snowflake, Hex, or equivalent) and use data to set priorities rather than to decorate decisions already made.

  • Have worked directly with Stripe or a metered billing platform (Metronome, Orb, OpenMeter), not through an engineer.

  • Hold billing surfaces (plan pages, checkouts, invoices, usage dashboards) to the same design standard as the rest of the product.

  • Have worked in or adjacent to API, infrastructure, or developer-platform products, and are comfortable with the technical context that comes with that territory.

  • Independently define and execute the long-term vision to bring billing, fulfillment, and provisioning to best-in-class for the company's success.

Bonus Points:

  • Experience leading an end-to-end pricing transformation or building a billing system from scratch.

  • Shipped cloud marketplace integrations (AWS, GCP, Azure) or Salesforce CPQ-to-billing integrations.

  • Proficiency using LLMs and coding agents as part of your day-to-day product management workflow.
