Role overview

This job description has been rewritten in fresh language using the facts in the listing. Source credit and original listing details are available below.

Customer.io is hiring a Senior Developer Experience Engineer for its Integrations team. This full-time role is remote in the United States and focuses on building and maintaining SDKs for Android, iOS, Node, and Go, along with the tools and infrastructure developers use to integrate with Customer.io. The company’s platform serves more than 9,000 organizations and uses Go, React, Ember, and AI in its technology stack.

You’ll lead SDK work from technical direction through implementation and release, improve the systems that make shipping dependable, and work with product and design to shape developer experiences. The role also involves an on-call rotation as needed, direct customer engagement at times, and using AI agents to make and verify changes across unfamiliar codebases and languages.

The stated starting salary is $150,000–$200,000 USD per year, or an equivalent in local currency, depending on experience and subject to market-rate adjustment. The package includes stock options, 100% coverage of medical, dental, vision, mental health, and supplemental insurance premiums for employees and their families; 16 weeks of paid parental leave; unlimited PTO; remote-work and wellness stipends; and a professional development budget.

The interview process includes an application, a 30-minute recruiter call, a 60-minute hiring manager and AI skills interview, and a 60-minute collaborative AI-enabled coding session extending a sample SDK. Final candidates complete a background check and employment verifications. Virtual interviews use Zoom video, and offers are made in writing on official Customer.io letterhead.

Role at a glance: Senior Developer Experience Engineer building Customer.io SDKs and developer tools, with a stated salary range of $150,000–$200,000 per year.

Responsibilities mentioned in the listing

  • Build and evolve SDKs for Android, iOS, Node, and Go, plus supporting developer tools.
  • Lead SDK initiatives from technical planning and implementation through release and outcome ownership.
  • Improve CI, automated testing, versioning, publishing, and release processes.
  • Work with product and design to turn loosely defined goals into effective developer experiences.
  • Join an on-call rotation as required to support the reliability of the systems built.
  • Use AI agents to make and verify multi-file changes across unfamiliar codebases and languages.
  • Apply customer empathy to understand SDK users’ needs and occasionally engage with them directly.

Qualifications stated in the listing

  • Expert-level ability in at least one established programming language, with strong software and API design fundamentals.
  • Experience building and evolving mature, production-quality software, and understanding how systems fit together and are consumed by other developers.
  • Strong fluency with current LLMs and agentic coding tools, such as Claude, Cursor, or Codex, including using them to navigate unfamiliar codebases, work across languages, and run tasks in parallel or autonomously.
  • Ability to work autonomously in ambiguous situations by clarifying problems, evaluating their value, and driving implementation without close direction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical decisions and tradeoffs clearly.
  • Ability to work across languages and technology stacks; prior experience with every supported language, including Swift, Kotlin, Node, and Go, is not required.
  • Nice to have: experience with external-facing SDKs, APIs, or developer tools; CI, testing, versioning, or release infrastructure; or forward-deployed engineering.
Full details from the source listing

Hi, I’m Josh, Engineering Manager at Customer.io. We’re looking for a curious, AI-forward Developer Experience Engineer to join our Integrations team and help us build the tools that developers rely on to integrate with Customer.io.

About Customer.io

Over 9,000 companies - from scrappy startups to global brands - use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day. Customer.io powers automated communication that people actually want to receive.

We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data. Under the hood: Go, React, Ember and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence.

What We Value

Ownership

You own problems end to end. You move fast, act like an owner, and thrive in ambiguity. You've led complex projects before, whether officially or not, and you're ready to do it again.

Engineers with product taste

You think like a developer using your tools, not just an engineer building them. You care about API design, developer experience, and everything in between.

A healthy skepticism for “the way things are done”

You bring rigor and creativity. Best practices matter - but never more than forward motion.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and evolve Customer.io's SDKs across platforms - including Android, iOS, Node, and Go - and the developer tools that support them
  • Lead SDK initiatives end to end: set technical direction, write the code, manage the release, and own the outcome
  • Improve SDK delivery infrastructure - CI, automated testing, versioning, publishing, and release processes - so shipping is reliable and low-friction
  • Partner closely with product and design to turn loosely defined goals into a great developer experience
  • Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the reliability of the systems you build
  • Use AI agents to make multi-file changes across unfamiliar codebases and languages by scoping the work, writing the prompt, and verifying the output
  • Bring strong customer empathy to the role - understanding what the engineers integrating with our SDKs actually need, and occasionally engaging directly with them

What we're looking for

  • Expert-level competency in at least one established programming language, with strong software design and API design fundamentals
  • Experience building and evolving mature, production-quality software, with a clear understanding of how systems fit together and how other developers consume them
  • Exceptional fluency with current LLMs and agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude, Cursor, Codex) - using AI to understand unfamiliar codebases, work across languages, and run things in parallel or autonomously
  • High autonomy in ambiguous environments - you clarify the problem, validate its value, and drive implementation without close direction
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs clearly
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple languages and stacks; prior experience in every language we support (Swift, Kotlin, Node, Go) is not required

Nice to have: experience building external-facing SDKs, APIs, or developer tools; experience owning CI, testing, versioning, or release infrastructure; or forward-deployed engineering experience.

We know our people are what make us great, and we’re committed to taking great care of them.
